New Parents
Congratulations on the birth of your new baby!
I am also the parent of a child with Down syndrome, and I understand the mixed feelings you may be experiencing. This can be a confusing and emotional time, but things will get better. Please remember that your baby will benefit from all of the activities that typical babies enjoy such as your local music class, Mom’s groups, library story times, etc. Give yourself time, surround yourself with people who love and care for you, and enjoy your new baby!
The Edmonton Down Syndrome Society (EDSS) has put together a New Parents package containing information about your baby’s developmental and medical needs, and focuses on what you need to know until your baby is about six months old. You probably have been given this information package in the hospital when you had your baby. If you did not receive a New Parents package, you can request one by e-mailing me at newparents@edss.ca.
EDSS also offers a Visiting Parents Program. A parent from the Visiting Parents Team will be happy to visit you to provide support and information and to help you sort through your New Parents package. If you are interested in a visit, call the EDSS office (780.944.4224) or e-mail me at vpt@edss.ca.
I invite you to join us at our EDSS monthly meetings (details are included on the Calendar page). If you require more information, please call the EDSS office and leave me a message or e-mail me at newparents@edss.ca. I look forward to meeting you and your family.
Sincerely,
Jill Munro
New Parent Package Coordinator
Ps: You are eligible for a free one-year membership to EDSS if your baby is under the age of one. In addition, a membership with EDSS also gives you a free automatic membership with the Canadian Down Syndrome Society.
To become a member of EDSS, either call, e-mail, or fill out the membership form located in your information package and mail it in. If you require a membership form please click here.
