About Us
The Edmonton Down Syndrome Society (EDSS) is a charitable organization that serves families in the Greater Edmonton Area and beyond, from Red Deer to Lloydminster, Grande Prairie, Fort McMurray, and the Northwest Territories.
We are committed to supporting people with Down syndrome and their families through programming, information, resources and connecting members with peer-to-peer support.
In Edmonton, we operate a 4,100-square-foot Family Centre where we offer on-site therapy programs like speech language, behaviour, occupational, and physical therapy; family resources and counselling; lifestyle and learning programs; musical theatre; social groups and the coordination of our Visiting Parents’ Teams and recreational programs like fitness, bowling, basketball, and hockey. Our centre is also home to the Joey Moss Literacy Centre for Excellence.

BEHAVIOUR THERAPIST
Edmonton Down Syndrome Society is seeking a Behaviour Therapist to join our team of professional contractors.

Responsibilities
- The flexibility of building your own schedule based on service demands.
- Completing functional behavioural assessments to identify family priorities and goals.
- Creating individualized regulation and/or behaviour plans.
- Writing reports and maintaining client files.
- Providing consultation regarding behavioural issues that interfere with development, learning and safety.
- Liaise with schools when asked for assessments of students with Down syndrome.
- Supporting families to implement plans and coordinate services with other service providers as needed.
- Enhancing family capacity by modeling and coaching families on best practices and strategies.
- Edmonton Down Syndrome Society also provides support to children and their families through funding from Family Support for Children with Disabilities (FSCD).
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in health, psychology, social or behavioural sciences or related area, training in cognitive behaviour therapy is an asset.
- Master’s degree in health, social or behavioural sciences or Master’s equivalency preferred.
- Experience with intervention models that support positive relationships, self-regulation, and social thinking.
- A passion for learning about the strengths, learning needs and best practices for individuals with Down syndrome.
- Family-centred focus.
- Experience working with people with intellectual disabilities, including Ds, ADHD, ASD, and Anxiety.
- Excellent problem-solving, critical thinking, decision-making skills and out of box thinking.
- Demonstrated organization and analytical skills.
- Work independently. Minimal supervision and direction required.
- Prior to employment, successful candidates will be required to submit Police Information Check and Intervention Record Check documents.
- Candidates must be a Canadian Citizen or Permanent Resident.
Compensation: $50.00 +
Immediate contractor positions available with flexible hours.
All clients are seen at the EDSS centre in our therapy rooms. All paperwork such as invoicing, booking appointments etc. is completed by EDSS staff.

SPEECH LANGUAGE PATHOLOGIST

Edmonton Down Syndrome Society is seeking a Speech Language Pathologist to join our team of contract therapists.
Responsibilities
- Integrate strategies into natural environments and activities.
- Work with infants, children, and their families in relation to Speech-Language Pathology
- Assess and manage feeding and swallowing issues with clients.
- Effectively communicate with other healthcare professionals
- Be committed to a family-centered care.
Qualifications
- Master of Science in Speech and Language Therapy, plus three years of direct experience
- Registered with the Alberta College of Speech and Language Pathologists and Audiologists (Practice Permit) is mandatory.
- Knowledge of the selection and design of alternative and augmentative communication systems
- Understanding of the Pyramid of Intervention (the integration of broad-based supports/strategies, as well as small group and individual strategies are critical.
- Strong assessment and problem-solving skills are required to identify and address developmental and educational delays.
- Effective decision making and leadership qualities.
- Ability to work independently.
- Possibility of supervision of SLPAs
- Prior to employment, successful candidates will be required to submit Police Information Check and Intervention Record Check documents.
- Candidates must be a Canadian Citizen or Permanent Resident
Compensation: $90.00 +
