BASE Camp (Building Academic Skills and Engagement)
Time: 9:00 a.m. - 12:00 p.m. Ages: 8 -14 years Weeks: Aug 14 - 18
Program Description:
BASE Camp is all about getting your child excited and motivated to participate in activities with an academic focus. This camp will include programming targeted at building your child’s literacy, numeracy, social communication, and emotional regulation skills, all while having fun! Each day will be jam-packed with meaningful activities and games, all while helping your child to learn important functional skills! Your child will have opportunities to engage in reading, writing, numeracy concepts, turn taking, and social communication. Pack up, and we will see you at BASE Camp. As this program has been designed for individuals with diagnoses, a main component will be fostering communication and social skills. This will be done through explicit teaching, as well as continued practice. Each program offered by the Edmonton Down Syndrome Society is developed and designed to be responsive to the registrants. This means that all skill levels are welcomed and appreciated. Programming will be designed to encourage participation from all registrants. The program facilitators are certificated teachers with a combined 15-years’ experience implementing programming for individuals with diagnoses at various ages and skill levels.
Fee: $100.00 per week
TIDE Camp (Teaching Independence to Define Excellence)
Time: 1:00 p.m. - 4:00 p.m. Ages: 15+ years Weeks: Aug 14 - 18
Program Description:
Independent living allows individuals to attain a sense of purpose and helps to build self-esteem. TIDE is focused on helping your loved one to feel confident and comfortable managing activities of daily living. The focus of this program is to build functional skills in the areas of literacy, numeracy, social communication, and other life skills. Programming for this camp will include activities such as planning and pricing out a grocery list, cooking simple meals, reading for comprehension and for pleasure, and writing for functional and fictional purposes. Learning at this age must be engaging and meaningful and adhere to each individual’s goals and interests. We hope your loved one will be happy as a clam at Camp TIDE!
